Lets face it: Carbs have gotten a bad rep. From low-carb to no-carb diets, everyone is going carb-less to get those oh-so-amazing abs. Let me be the first one to break the good news: Carbs are perfectly fine! Of course, everything in moderation is fine for the body, but there are a number of delicious and nutritious carbs out there that will satisfy your cravings for that french baguette.
What most people don’t realize is that there are good carbs, and there are bad carbs, and while one is your friend, the other is definitely your diet’s enemy. Let me give you a little breakdown on the “good’s” and the “bad’s” of carbs. Any of those snack-type foods that are loaded with things like high fructose corn syrup and refined ingredients are generally going to be the bad carbs. Though undeniably delicious, carbs like these spike the glucose levels in your body, which ultimately signal your body to “store as fat,” ruining your beach babe body before you even know what happened. Foods like “white” bread and “white” rice seem super innocent, but they’ve been bleached and stripped of all vitamins and nutrients, making them empty calories.
Empty calories are foods that when digested, give you no health benefits whatsoever, and instead contribute to your body holding onto any fat cells in existence.
On the other hand, good, healthy carbs are used and metabolized by the body for energy. When you’re heading into a intense workout, it’s the good carbs that are going to kick in and keep you going. Healthy grains like lentils, quinoa and brown rice are great for the body and are loaded with essential vitamins, nutrients and proteins.
